SNS Secret From Swan Mountain Soaps

In continuing with my Etsy SNS Secret addiction…. They very first secret I found was Lip Therapy from Swan Mountain Soaps. We had a little delay in shipping, which is why I posted about my second secret first. So anyway, my package arrived a couple of days ago. I got my lip therapy which was my secret and I also ordered the grab bag for $10. And in that grab bag was a full sized bar of lilac soap, Creamy Coconut soap and Lime Mojito soap. They all smell great, I cant wait to try them out. I also got a soap cube of Wild Dandelions scent which smells interesting and a cube of Kumquat soap. And I Also got a little jar of Body butter, sadly, I cant read the font to tell you what the scent is and a little pot of cool peppermint sugar scrub. And a tube of Geek Balm unscented lip balm. Not too shabby for a grab bag! Thanks Christina!!

An online friend of mine told me about the Saturday night specials and Saturday night secrets over at Etsy. And now I'm hooked!! I have done it the last 3 Saturdays so far! The first secret I found has not arrived yet, so I can't say anything about it until it does. Hopefully it will show up!

But the second Saturday I found this beautifully secret over at Hannah’s Hands.

The photo doesn’t do it justice. It is awesome in person. It was shipped out so fast too! You should stop buy and check out her shop. There are so many beautiful pieces available! I know I bookmarked her shop and plan to be back soon to do more shopping!! Who you calling Hussy!!

A couple weeks ago a special sample package arrived for me from a great company called Farm Hussy! Yes you read that right its Farm Hussy. They are pretty new to the scene. If you didn’t get to try them out in your February Valentine’s Sample Box, don’t worry because they are the sponsor for the April Box! You have got to try them!!!

Its been pretty cold here in NJ the last week or so and my skin needs all the help it could get…. There Cream of the Crop is awesome! Julie (the fabulously sweet and generous owner) sent me a 2oz. cream of the crop in “Im yours until the sun comes up scent” which is a close dupe of the infamous Parfums Gres, a sharp, flowery fragrance -- an amazing bouquet of ginger, citrus, and fresh cut flowers. A 2oz cream of the crop in “Pecan Somebody Your Own size” which is A mouthwatering desert classic ~you can almost taste the creamy butter, Georgia pecans, and real whipped cream. Definitely NOT for the faint of heart!
And not to mention right up my alley since I LOVE all the foody scents!

Julie also sent a 4oz whipped soy glace in “Deja-Moo, I’ve heard that bull before” A Citrusy Fruit S-MOOO-thie blend of grapefruit, lemons, key lime, fresh cucumbers, Jasmine, pineapples, blackberries and a splash of champagne.

Both the Cream of the crop and the whipped soy glace were wonderful. They were not greasy at all and they absorbed in fast.

And last but certainly not least a big bottle of Sissy’s Silo-tion. The label says 2oz but it looks like a 4oz bottle to me. Its pretty big. The scent is “My Funny ValenSwine” which is a drop dead sexy scent that carries a plethora of top notes including bergamot, tea, and peony, with a nose overload of jasmine, freesia, orchid, orangeflower, and a kiss of peach, and can you believe they also threw in some cedarwood, patchouli, amber, leather, musk, and vanilla?!!

This is by far my favorite non-foody scent ever! (yes believe it or not, there are other scents that I like besides food ones. Not many but there are some. I have been gloping this on every morning. It is such a sexy intoxicating scent, I just cant stop smelling it. Im easily addicted… I think I might need help! LOL

Also there was some Bath Fizzle for Shizzle powder, but I don’t take baths. Don’t say ewwwwwwwww!! Because I do take showers! So I passed them on to my good pal who does love a nice relaxing bath. I didn’t write down what scents I got though… sorry….

Everything was packaged up so nicely and there was even some candy for my sweet tooth! I hardly ever get any samples from the sample box, everything goes into the boxes so this was a great treat for me!

I know it rhymes... But you really can save time and money with USPS online!

Shipping can really take up a good deal of time as well as money. Did you know that using www.usps.com you can save both time and money?? Yes its true!! Here's how!

In order to ship you are gonna need boxes right? Of course you are. Well, you can order priority boxes, flat rate priority boxes and even flat rate APO priority boxes right online.
They don’t cost you a penny, and they are delivered right to your door.

If you set up an account with usps.com put in your credit card you can begin printing your shipping labels right from your printer. They just bill your credit card and its ready to go. Almost forgot, when you print your shipping label online, the delivery confirmation is FREE! And just recently they started a program that when you ship online (its called click n ship) there is a slight discount in the price! So you see, you can save money big time!

Now for the saving time part. Since your package is ready to go with its pre-paid shipping label, you can just walk into the post office and put it on the counter. No more waiting on those incredibly long and painfully slow lines! You might want to check with them where they would like the packages to go before you just plop it down, you know how they can get a little pissy when you do something they don’t like. My post office has a special spot for them to go.

But wait! There is an even better time saving miracle! They also started doing carrier pick up. This is a free service believe it or not. You request for a carrier pick up online and then when your regular mail man comes to deliver your mail, he will knock on the door to get your out going packages. So basically, you don’t need to ever step foot in a post office again! Which to me, its worth its weight in gold!!

Our First Road Trip to Little Egg Harbor Soap!

5th Avenue Bath Co.

I just had to post about the super bunch of product samples my new friend over at 5th Avenue Bath Co. sent me! I learned about 5th Avenue Bath Co. from Liz over at Wickedly Chic, and boy Im glad I did!

As you can see from the picture everything came all packed up cute in a little striped bag that will be reused many times I'm sure!

So here’s the scoop on what was in the bag!

8oz of Skin Nourishing body Wash in Chestnuts & Brown Sugar scent.
This is pretty cool.. its on the thick side so its not running through your fingers while you try to use it and it lathers up a lot. And it smells great too!

I have never really used anything other than soap in the shower but I could get used to using this for sure!

Exfoliating Body Polish in Coconut Lime Verbena scent. This was nice, rinsed away clean and my skin felt refreshed.

Jar of Coffee Body Scrub in ah.. coffee scent! LOL I haven’t tried this yet.
But I will be soon!

A nice chunk of Handmade Olive Oil and Shea butter soap. I haven’t tried this yet either because hubby says I can only have 1 soap open in the shower at a time. But the good news is the big honking bar of soap I was using is almost gone!

Lip Balm which I already have on my desk at the store and I apply constantly while I'm there!

And a bottle of Pillow & Linen Spray in “Stress Relief” Scent which is eucalyptus spearmint.. and ahhhhhh I love this baby! I keep it home on my desk and spray it periodically to keep away stress. What I really need here is a holster of some sort. Then I can carry this baby wherever I go and spray as needed. Like at the post office.. the grocery store… the bank… etc!

So thanks again to Ericka at 5th Avenue Bath co for sending me this generous bag of her fabulous products! I’m really enjoying them!

How long have you been in business? Soap Sushi has only been open for a few months. I started a soap business after closing my beadmaking business, LuNa Beads. I was a beadmaker for almost 10 years.Tell us what do you do: I make Artisan Soaps. I have made other bath and body products, but my true love is soaps.

How did you get started in all this? I have always loved crafts. I started making soaps ages ago as a hobby, and really loved it. I finally decided to take the plunge and open a shop when I realized how much I love to make soap.

Do you have a specialty product or product line? My specialty is themed "bar" soaps. I make beverage bar soaps, candy bar soaps, bar soaps with toys (made of soap!) embedded, a Halloween line, and I'm constantly brainstorming for more themes.

Your products are a bit unusual, are you the only one that has it? I don't think anyone else is doing soap quite the way I am. My soaps are more than just great lather and scent; they have personality!

What is your usual turn around time? a couple of business days

What are some things you are doing to help keeping going during this tough economy? People always need to buy gifts. My soaps are very giftable, and I'm working on new products and strategies for each holiday, birthdays, weddings, and showers.

Failure to Communicate Part II

I want to do a little follow up to my previous post about communication.

About 2 weeks ago, a customer contacted me via my Things That Make Scents website contact form inquiring about a specific scent they were looking for. Now this scent wasn’t part of my regular scent line but it just so happens I did have some of the oils that we were testing with.
So I wrote back immediately, and told him that I did have it. He then proceeded to order a wax dipped bear in that scent. So, I whipped it up, and shipped it out to Maryland for him.

Well, over the weekend, this customer drove up with his wife from Maryland to visit the store. I couldn’t believe it! He told me that there were looking for this scent and contacted a whole bunch of places online and I was the only one that had gotten back to him. Two weeks later and NOBODY else got back to him. They bought a bunch of stuff at the store that day and said they will be back for holiday gifts. Lucky for me, I picked up a happy new customer! How cool was that?? And it couldn’t have been any easier! All I did was reply to his email. Whether you have what they are looking for or not, you can at least make a suggestion at another scent or product that might fit their needs.

So take a second and ask yourself how many customers did I lose by not getting back to them fast enough, or at all?? Is my contact form working? Have I checked my spam folder lately? You might want to go check because there are plenty of other companies out there that would be thrilled with a new customer in this tough economy.

What We Have Here is Failure to Communicate

Nothing annoys me more than when someone doesn’t get back to me when I have a question, issue, concern or whatever! Like right now I'm trying to track down someone at www.scratch-offstickers.com about my order placed on 10/15 that I have not received yet. I have emailed, filled out their contact form and just left a voicemail 10 mins ago. Needless to say I'm not happy! Grrrrrrr.

Communication in business is extremely important. Even more so when you are doing business online. Your customers cant just walk up and poke you in the arm to get your attention. So you have to be very careful that you aren't ignoring them. Emails should be answered in a timely fashion. I know spam is a big problem, but you simply cant have the luxury of those pretty nifty spam filters or spam blockers that everyone talks about. People use all types of email services for their email accounts, what happens if they get lost in your spam folder? And certainly don’t set up any automatic delete for spam because what if a new customers email has words that cause it to be flagged as spam? Poof its deleted. Gone forever right along with your new customer.

Ok, you can stop yelling at me now. Yes it is annoying but it’s all part of the price of doing business.

A website contact us form is a good way to keep the communication open, as long as it works that is. You should check your website contact form periodically just to make sure its still working. Don’t laugh, I'm serious. I have witnessed first hand contact forms just stop working. It happens sometimes, that's technology for ya. Better to be safe than sorry right??

Oh and last but not least, please make sure your mailbox isn’t full! Do you know what happens when someone tries to email you and your mailbox is full?? It bounces back. So, you don’t get it, the person that sent it gets it back, gets annoyed and moves on. Again, another potential lost customer or sale.

Times are tough all over right now, and I'm grateful for every bit of business I do get, I certainly don’t want to lose any. Checking on these few little things can make a difference.

How long have you been in business? Since 2006

How did you get started? My mom influenced me a great deal growing up, teaching me about herbs and I have been tinkering ever since.

Do you have a specialty product or product line? My handcrafted artisan soaps are what I am most proud of. They are extremely luxurious and it took me years to get a formula that I was finally happy with.

Do you have an unusual product that you are the only one that has it? My Pineapple Passion Body Butter has real pineapple in it....mmmm it's delish if I say so myself.

What is your usual turn around time? Usually between 3-4 days, we make things fresh for our customers. During Christmas a little longer but we like to ship out 3-4 days after the order has been placed.

What are some challenges you face being in Canada? The resources here are virtually non existant. It is very hard for new companies to get noticed and supported in Canada .

What would you say to US customer to help convince them to try your products? Nobody's products are the same, our products are made with care and we don't skimp of ingredients no matter what. We find the most economical shipping. Every order contains free samples.

What are some things you are doing to help keeping going during this tough economy? Recycling boxes, papers. Rolling with the changes. To survive in today's economy you have to be able to change with the times. Change is good.

How did you get started? I was nursing my kid and was kinda bored. So I combined all my experience as a pastry cook, massage therapist and designer and within one month I started with my first 3 products.

Do you have a specialty product or product line? Ha Ha ...
(I guess that is a silly question huh?)

What is your usual turn around time? 1 - 2 days to ship for the body balms and 1 to 2 weeks for custom lip balm.

What are some things you are doing to help keeping going during this tough economy? I pay attention to my wholesale client needs, keeping their costs steady, delivering the goods quickly.

How long have you been in business: Brooklyn Flavors has been in business for about 1 year.

Tell us what you do: We make natural skin care products and scented soy candles. Most of
our skin care line is made with Shea butter.

How did you get started? Brooklyn Flavors was started because of a dry skin issue my family and I had especially during the winter. My children suffered so much, we decided to take them to the doctor and was told to get Eucerin cream but that didn't help. So I decided to make my own, that way I would be able to personalize it for their skin type. It worked! In the near future we will make hair care and pet care.

Do you have a specialty product line? What's so special about our product line is we decided to name them after some of the historical neighborhoods and streets of Brooklyn. We
also have a product called Brownstone for the beautiful brownstones houses in some neighborhoods.

Do you have an unusual product that you are the only one that has it? What makes my products unusual is so far no one in Brooklyn has named their products after their neighborhoods.

What are some things you are doing to help keeping going during this tough economy? We do a lot of street festivals during the summer months. That's what helps with advertising and through the tough economy. As hard as the economy is people still want and love handmade products, especially if they are made is Brooklyn.

How long have you been in business? Since 1991

Tell us what you do: I am a third generation Aromatherapist, Herbalist, Soapmaker and Skin & Body Care Formulator born in Prague, Czech Republic.. I have been making soaps since 1969.

How did you get started? Both mom and grandma made soaps, lotions, potions and creams. I use to think that my family had magicians because to a child what they made was just magic. People would come to buy these things so they would get better. My mom's kitchen was full of herbs drying upside down, jars full of steeping herbs or dark glass bottles filled with wonderful or "smelly" liquids.

Do you have a specialty product or product line? I specialize in handcrafted soaps and gentle skin care.

Do you have an unusual product that you are the only one that has it? I have branched out into specialty shaving soaps, men's toiletries and their skin care needs.

What is your usual turn around time? My usual turn around time is 24 to 48 hours, excluding weekends.

What are some things you are doing to help keeping going during this tough economy? I recycle peanuts, bubble wrap and clean shipping boxes.

Reminiscing back to her childhood, Irena remembers grandma making soap outside in a big kettle over an open fire. The lye was made by pouring ashes over rain water which my grandma collected during the rainy season. When she had enough lye, she would suspend an egg to see if the lye was strong enough. If the egg sank, the lye was too strong. If the egg just barely floated on the top of the water, the lye wasn't strong enough. But, if the egg submerged just half way, the lye was just right. She collected grease drippings in the kitchen in an empty coffee can. This soap was mostly used to wash laundry and dirty dishes. Our clothes were washed in a tin tub with a wooden washboard.

How long have you been in business?
We started the business in August 2001.

What you do?
We manufacture pampering and wellness products including aromatherapy oils, bath, body, home fragrance and more. We also offer alternative healing products like colour therapy, chakra balancing and personal and spiritual motivational products.

How did you get started in all this?
I admitted my addiction to bath and body products and needed a way to reduce the amount of money I was spending. One day I got the idea to make my own products. I already had professional culinary training where I learned to formulate recipes so I figured making bath and body products would be easy. I researched my competition, decided who my target market would be and created the product line and website.

Do you have a specialty product or product line?
Yes, I would consider our bath and body line to be our specialty product line (especially the therapeutic herbal bath soaks and Bath of the Month Club). We use natural ingredients including pure essential oils, herbs and botanicals and we use exclusive mood fragrance blends that are not available anywhere else—online or offline.

What is your usual turn around time?
Since most of our products are hand made at the time of purchase, the current order turn around time is 5-7 business days for retail orders and 12-15 business days for wholesale orders.

What are some things you are doing to help keeping going during this tough economy?
We try to order most supplies, containers, etc. from one or two suppliers. We have also reduced production to a couple of days a week—saving a little money on water, electricity, etc. For our customers we offer periodic sales, coupon discounts and incentives for referrals.
